Cross-Platform Recovery to OpenStack
Back up VMware, Citrix Hypervisor and XCP-ng workloads, then recover them directly into OpenStack. One platform protects both environments, under one license, with the same policies before and after recovery.

Key Highlights
One platform for backup and recovery across platforms
Your existing restore points are the recovery source. No separate point tool to license, learn or maintain.
Agentless at the source
Backup runs through hypervisor APIs. Nothing is installed inside guests on VMware, Citrix Hypervisor or XCP-ng.
Data protection continuity
Workloads stay protected before and after recovery into OpenStack. The source environment remains untouched, so recovery can be validated before any production decision.
One universal license
Source and target platforms are covered under a single license. No per-platform fees, no separate recovery product, no feature tier to unlock.
Cross-Platform Recovery Capabilities
Cross-hypervisor restore engine
VMware, Citrix Hypervisor and XCP-ng backups are restored directly into OpenStack. No intermediary conversion appliance and no manual conversion pipeline to build and maintain.
Built-in disk format conversion
Source disks (VMDK, VHD, XVA) are converted to QCOW2 or RAW during the restore, with guest driver injection and resource mapping. It happens inside the restore workflow, not as a separate manual step.
Guided recovery wizard
General, Storage, Networking and Advanced mapping in one flow: destination project and cluster, per-disk storage mapping, target network, instance flavor and access key.
Full and incremental backups with CBT
Changed Block Tracking keeps restore points current without re-reading whole VMs, so every recovery starts from fresh data.
Protection continues after recovery
Once workloads run in OpenStack, the same policy-driven protection applies: immutability (Object Lock, Retention Lock), IsoLayer air-gap and Recovery Plans. No re-architecture, no second tool.
Native OpenStack integration
Agentless OpenStack protection with Horizon and Skyline UI integration, multitenancy and RBAC for the recovered environment.
Broad guest OS coverage
RHEL 8/9, CentOS Stream 8/9, openSUSE Leap 15.2–15.6, Fedora Server 41, Ubuntu 22.04/24.04, Debian 11/12, Windows 10/11 Pro and Windows Server 2019/2022.

See cross-platform recovery in action
Watch Storware Backup and Recovery take a VMware backup and recover it as a running, protected OpenStack instance: selecting the restore point, disk conversion and driver injection, resource mapping and validation.
Cross-platform Recovery
Storware protects the workloads after you migrate them with platform-native tooling. One platform still protects both sides of that move.
VMware vSphere / ESXi → OpenStack
The most common trigger today. Broadcom-era licensing changes are pushing organizations to a stable, open target — with protection continuity intact.
VMware to OpenStack migrationCitrix Hypervisor → OpenStack
Added in v7.5. For organizations facing Citrix licensing changes and end-of-life timelines on certain versions.
XCP-ng → OpenStack
Added in v7.5. Open-source Xen source environments move to OpenStack through the same backup-driven workflow.
How cross-platform recovery works
Recovery into OpenStack uses the backups you already run. Four steps, one platform, no separate tooling.

1. Back up the source.
Run agentless full and incremental backups of VMware, Citrix Hypervisor or XCP-ng VMs, with Changed Block Tracking.
2. Select the OpenStack target.
In the recovery wizard, choose the destination project, cluster, per-disk storage mapping, network and instance flavor.
3. Recover into OpenStack.
Storware converts the disks (VMDK/VHD/XVA → QCOW2/RAW), injects guest drivers, maps resources and restores the VM directly into the target project.
4. Validate and keep protecting
Verify the workload in OpenStack, then protect it with the same platform and the same policies. No tool change, no retraining.
What is cross-platform recovery in Storware?
Cross-platform recovery restores a VM backup taken on one hypervisor directly into a different platform. Storware recovers VMware, Citrix Hypervisor and XCP-ng backups into OpenStack, converting disks, injecting guest drivers and mapping resources during the restore.
Which source and target platforms are supported?
Sources are VMware vSphere/ESXi, Citrix Hypervisor and XCP-ng. The target is OpenStack, including Red Hat OpenStack Platform, Canonical OpenStack, Virtuozzo Infrastructure, OpenMetal, Platform9 and community deployments.
Do I need a separate tool or conversion appliance?
No. Cross-platform recovery is part of Storware Backup and Recovery. The backups you already run are the recovery source, and disk conversion happens inside the restore workflow.
Do I need to install agents on my VMs?
No. Backups of VMware, Citrix Hypervisor and XCP-ng run through hypervisor APIs, with nothing installed inside guests. OpenStack protection after recovery is agentless as well.
What happens to data protection after recovery?
Recovered workloads are protected by the same platform and policies in OpenStack, including immutability, IsoLayer air-gap and Recovery Plans. The source environment stays protected and untouched.
Which guest operating systems are supported?
RHEL 8/9, CentOS Stream 8/9, openSUSE Leap 15.2–15.6, Fedora Server 41, Ubuntu 22.04/24.04, Debian 11/12, Windows 10/11 Pro and Windows Server 2019/2022. Check docs.storware.eu for current limitations before recovery.
Can I recover VMs to Proxmox VE, Nutanix AHV or Hyper-V?
Cross-platform recovery currently targets OpenStack. Storware protects Proxmox VE, Nutanix AHV and Hyper-V natively, with backup and recovery under the same universal license.
Does cross-platform recovery require extra licensing?
No. Source and target platforms are covered by one universal license. There are no per-platform fees, no separate recovery product and no feature tiers.
