For Storware: what does it mean “status: in operation (preferred)”?

VM in running state.

Backups stays QUEUED and no progressing (permissions, or wrong config.)

Check vProtect node is online, and it can do any task. More: HERE

For KVM backup: does Storware have its own CBT (changed block tracking) tool for tracking changes only since any backup or the last backup or it leverages on QEMU-KVM to do it?

Storware to make incremental backup on KVM machine, create and require to keep snapshot on VM.

Incremental backup does not start (correct config., schedules, group assignment)

Check HERE

Errors with privileges (privileges location of staging directory)

Part of documentation, with vProtect node installation/configuration: HERE  – point 2

Backup will not start in scheduled time (time zone issue)

Check HERE

Connection issues to hypervisor (SSH access for root needed to access hypervisor)

That require to write what privileges is required to do backup on “KVM”, etc. without root user.

Can Storware and ISP run on the same server?

Yes.

Connection issues between vProtect node and server (HTTPS connection between node and server)

Check HERE

Dedup does not work (wrong VDO configuration)

Here are examples with VDO: CHECK

Certificate authorization does not work (correct settings of auth. certificates)

We support only ssh-rsa keys.

Export task not executed in time (increase window length)

Does Storware allows to backup Nutanix Acropolis to IBM Spectrum Protect?

Yes – to any supported backup provider. Check HERE

Does Storware allows same KVM backup as Veeam?

Storware allows to backup of KVM (and several other KVM-based platforms including OpenStack, oVirt/RHV, Oracle Linux Virtualization Manager). Different set of features for each platform. Check HERE

Does Storware allows backup of more hypervisors than Commvault?

List of supported hypervisors for Storware: https://storware.gitbook.io/backup-and-recovery/overview/support-matrix

What is Storware scheduling process different to Acronis?

Schedules in Storware can be shared among policies. You define schedule for a particular policy type (and optionally backup type). You can use both time-based scheduling (specific hour) and interval based (every X minutes).

Does Storware covers also the integration with Avamar (not only Networker)?

Yes, we support both – Networker and Avamar.

Does Storware support IBM Spectrum Protect?

If you are interested in backup of endpoints we can deliver you the integration with IBM Spectrum protect. It allows to store the data with IBM SP and use all the features it offers. But Storware is not integrated with IBM SP. It stores data on variety of file systems only.

Does Storware support the integration with third party backup software not in Storware support list such as ARCserve, Commvault and Veeam?

Storware provides access by API, and command line. You can trigger Storware by API or command line to execute a backup/restore/mount job and hide Storware under other solutions. But Storware right now does not support storing data directly to ARCserve, Commvault and Veeam.

What are the benefits of separating the staging space and backup storage?

https://storware.gitbook.io/backup-and-recovery/deployment/backup-destinations/filesystem/regular-filesystem/virtual-data-optimizer-vdo

– Depends where you plan to store backups. If you plan to store more backups in “cloud” then you don’t process to deduplicate/rededuplicate data before you send it to the cloud.

– If you plan to store backups on VDO, then you can use the same volume for staging and backup destination.

What would be the overhead like if VDO is enabled for dedupe/compression? How much additional CPU core and RAM would we have to size to cater for dedup/ compression overhead?

VDO is software deduplication mechanizm built in kernel RedHat/CentOS from version 7.5. Here is link to VDO requirements:

https://access.redhat.com/documentation/en-us/red_hat_enterprise_linux/8/html/deduplicating_and_compressing_logical_volumes_on_rhel/vdo-requirements_deduplicating-and-compressing-logical-volumes

For OpenShift/ Kubernetes backup: Is the pausing of pods trigged from Storware? For those that are not Ceph RBD volumes, Storware will not be able to create snapshots for incremental backups?

If POD have persistent storage other then CEPH RBD then Pod is paused for backup process. In other way the backuped data will be inconsistent. If Pod have data on ceph RBD volume then we do snapshot of that volume and POD is not paused.

Does Storware support synthetic full backup?

Yes, in Storware 4.2 we add that functionality to perform synthetic backup.

Is there a dedup database or index database for VDO? If yes, do we need to propose an SSD for the dedupe/ index database? And what’s the SSD requirement?
How do we size it?

For VDO we set only one block device. Check a document where is described how prepare volume for VDO to put “database” on fast storage: (Page 51, Example 5.1)

https://is.muni.cz/th/rq7e2/petrovic_diploma_thesis.pdf

Does Storware support granular file level restore for KVM?

Yes – for KVM we do support file level restore (mountable backups) as well as incremental backup.

Does Storware support also the new Spectrum Protect Plus VSNAP as the backup repository (as it does with Spectrum Protect)?

Yes, we support VSNAP.

I would like to learn more about Kubernetes backup process.

You can find the details about Kubernetes backup process here, at the end of the article HERE

Here is my observation: I think Storware is creating snapshots with certain permissions. And VM Manager is not able to delete them.

If It is KVM stand-alone can you check file permissions on QCOW2 files created by Storware? In other platforms Storware creates snapshots as the user provided as the credentials, so it should not conflict on permissions level with other tools, if only they have sufficient permissions.

What is the difference in licensing pr. virtual machine or hosts?

Every environment grows in a different way. We decide to give you flexibility of choosing licensing per host (physical machine with to nodes) or virtual machines of protected hypervisor. If you rapidly grow on VM side, per host is better choice for you. However you cannot mix these licensing techniques.

Does the Storware server and node need to be installed on a virtual machine?

I believe we’re talking about Nutanix case – yes, at least node. Server can be anywhere but needs to be accessible from the node.

Does the Storware server and node have internet connection?

In general – yes yum needs Internet to download packages during installation (unless you have all repos you need already in your intranet)

Is there a Nutanix environment setting to use Storware?

Not too much – just create VM with CentOS 7 minimal for Storware and later define Hypervisor Manager:

Nutanix setup HERE

– You can install both server and node on the same VM

Where SSH credentials should be entered for other nodes? Or must be the same for all Kubernetes nodes?

You can enter the credentials for other nodes in the Hypervisors tab. They don’t have to be the same – just make sure they are valid.

Thank you for your interesting in our software. If you have further question don’t hesitate to contact us: support@storware.eu.

Have a great day!

Storware Team.
