What is the Storware Backup Appliance?
The Storware Backup Appliance (SBA) is a pre-integrated hardware platform running Storware Backup and Recovery on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Hardware, software, and licensing arrive as a single unit — sized, configured, and tested before it reaches your rack. There is no operating system to build and no engine to install: you connect the appliance and start defining protection policies in the same session. One device, one license, full coverage across virtual, physical, and containerized workloads — protecting data at rest, in transit, and at scale.
Which SBA models are available, and how do I choose one?
The appliance ships in five configurations, sized by usable capacity and throughput. The SBA 1010 and 1010E are 1U entry models with 10 TB SSD (with an option to unlock a further 5 TB), suited to smaller or edge sites. The SBA 1020 (20 TB NVMe, 1U), SBA 2050 (50 TB NVMe, 2U), and SBA 2100 (100 TB NVMe, 2U) step up raw capacity, memory, and network throughput for larger estates. Model choice comes down to how much data you protect, your retention targets, and available network bandwidth — 10 GbE on the 1010 line, 2×25 GbE SFP28 from the 1020 upward. What is the difference between storage capacity and logical capacity?
Storage capacity is the raw NVMe or SSD installed in the appliance. Logical capacity is how much protected data that represents after deduplication and compression — for example, up to 100 TB of logical capacity on 20 TB of raw NVMe (SBA 1020). The achievable ratio depends on your data: virtual machine images and databases with repeated blocks deduplicate well, while already-compressed or encrypted data does not. Treat the logical figures as planning guidance rather than a fixed guarantee — real ratios follow your workload mix.
Which platforms and workloads can the appliance protect?
Because the appliance runs the full Storware Backup and Recovery engine, it protects the same range of environments from one console: VMware, Microsoft Hyper-V, OpenStack, Red Hat OpenShift, Nutanix AHV, VergeOS, KVM, and Citrix Hypervisor, alongside physical machines, containers, and cloud targets. Virtual, physical, and containerized workloads sit under one set of protection policies, rather than a separate tool for each platform.
Does the appliance require agents inside my machines?
For supported virtualization platforms, Storware works agentlessly — it operates through the hypervisor or platform API, so there are no in-guest agents to deploy or maintain across your VMs. The one documented exception is Microsoft Hyper-V, which uses a lightweight host-level agent. Agent-based protection remains available where it is the right fit, such as file-level backup for specific Windows or Linux hosts. In practice: agentless by default, agent-based where you need it.
How is the appliance licensed?
One license covers both the device and the software, with every feature included — no per-platform fees, no feature tiers, no extra charge for adding a new environment, and no per-ticket support costs. When your estate changes — a new hypervisor, a migration to OpenStack, more workloads to protect — the licensing model stays the same. It is the “one license, full coverage” model behind Storware Backup and Recovery, delivered as a single hardware-and-software contract.
How does the appliance keep protected data safe from ransomware and tampering?
Recovery copies only help if an attacker cannot reach them. The appliance provides immutable backups, air-gapped copies, and encryption for data at rest and in transit. Access to backup operations is governed by RBAC and multi-factor authentication, keeping control scoped to the right people. Together, these mean a compromised production environment does not automatically compromise your recovery points.
Can the appliance scale as our data grows?
In two ways. Within a model, capacity headroom — and, on the 1010 line, a 5 TB unlock option — gives room to grow. Across the range, the SBA line steps from 10 TB to 100 TB of raw capacity, so you can size for current needs and move up as retention windows or workload counts increase. Because the appliance is dedicated hardware, protection and production run independently: backup load does not compete with production systems for resources.
Does it fit a hybrid or cloud strategy?
Yes. The appliance protects on-premises workloads and can extend copies to public or private cloud for offsite retention, supporting a hybrid data-protection strategy. Deduplication reduces what you transfer and store off-site, keeping bandwidth and cloud storage costs predictable.
